About Me

I specialize in extending and customizing PeopleSoft applications using a variety of technologies including IScripts, Ajax, Java, and PeopleCode. Prior to joining Oracle in 2007, I spent 6 years working for a PeopleSoft customer. These days I use my technical skills to support the PeopleSoft technical sales staff. You can read more about my projects and PeopleSoft related tips on Jim's PeopleSoft Journal.

Some of my more exciting projects include customizing PeopleSoft with Monkeygrease; A PeopleSoft/Facebook integration Ajax Pagelet; WML for PeopleSoft's AWE; many, many Ajax customizations; and Java distributed batch processing for PeopleSoft.

Look for me at OpenWorld, Alliance, Collaborate, and other user groups. I'm either in the demo pods, meet the experts, or giving a presentation.

PeopleSoft as a Password Authentication "Ticket" Server

Posted on March 23, 2009 at 11:58pm 0 Comments

My post Generating an AuthToken for SwitchUser demonstrates how to acquire and expire PeopleSoft authentication tokens. Using this approach, you could hook any custom application into the PeopleSoft security model, allowing PeopleSoft to manage security for many of your custom enterprise applications. Continuous token (ticket) validation could be implemented through a very simple web service that calls… Continue

GZip Compress Static Files

Posted on March 23, 2009 at 11:00am 0 Comments

My PeopleSoft web server contains several JavaScript and CSS files that I embed in PeopleSoft pages using the various techniques described in this blog. Unlike files served by the PeopleSoft application, the web server does not GZip compress these static text files. Until recently, I used the GZip ServletFilter described by Jayson Falkner in his post Two Servlet Filters Every Web Application Should Have. But GZipping…

Generating an AuthToken for SwitchUser

Posted on March 23, 2009 at 1:00am 0 Comments

As the name implies, the PeopleCode SwitchUser function allows developers to switch the logged in Operator ID from one user to another. For security reasons, you can only switch identities if you either have another user's operator ID and password or another user's valid authentication token (AuthToken). While I'm sure there are numerous uses for this function, here are my top…

Jim,

With the classic metalink for Oracle DB being retired/rolled over into My Oracle Support this weekend, I just wondered what your take on the current My Oracle Support application was. Since the support portal for PeopleSoft apps has gone from Customer Connection, to Metalink 3, to My Oracle Support - I think the support portals themselves, along with a lot of the support reps, has gone from mediocre to bad to horrifically bad, respectively. I know there intention is good, but it seems like they are not testing these things very well.

Similarly, I’d have to say that in my 10 years of being a PS DBA, I’ve seem PS product quality consistently go downhill. You take on that as well?

Hey Jim,
Nothing personal, but do you really believe that PeopleSoft is good software or just that it is on par with most ERP software out there? I have been working with software for years (not ERP) and I find PeopleSoft extremely kludgey and hard to fathom. Maybe it is because I lack the domain knowledge but from a purely computer science perspective PeopleSoft is old/bad technology built on bad/decaying design.
