I am looking for examples on how to read an Excel document on a Unix based OS with Application Engine.

What is the best way to open, read and process data in Excel (XLS) with AE?

I think you should convert your Excel file to csv format.

Agreed. A File Layout Definition should be used; presumably, you know which fields are in the file and the File Layout will parse the data into the fields properly.
